Do you have a brand name or know the size of the drill bit? I've been thinking about giving magnet mods a try, but I can't find a drill like that in local hardware stores. study

That tool is called a pin vise with a swivel head or a pin vise drill, it will hold any small size drill bits. try jewelry suppliers like RioGrande.com or ebay

but i only want to buy one type
do you think that if i buy the white kind, it would transfer ok onto dark surfaces as well?

Hey J - you'll probably get _mixed_ results. The white type always has a kind of transparency to it, so when you put it on a darker material the darker material shows through even on the printed areas, so brighter colours end up going a bit muddy looking.

Ha! Very Happy No worries mate. I've probably got a couple of attempts that turned our poor because of using the light paper on darker material. I'll snap a pic. at some stage and PM it to you and you'll be able to see what I mean.

how about dark paper on white clothes?
i would guess the problem would be the white transfer paper staying white
(unless of course the design doesnt need to be transparent in spots)

i should probably just buck up lol

Yeah, exactly, there is no option to have transparent with the dark paper. Probably fine on white but not so good when you want a lighter coloured material to show on portions of the design.

I suppose the crux of it is the design really and what look you're trying to go for.

Look forward to seeing whatever you get up to anyways. Very Happy

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Empty lenses

Post  cripery Thu Nov 12, 2015 1:34 pm

Here's a quick pic. of some more pandemic lenses that didn't make the cut for my entry to the lens contest. The white ones that I did enter were my own lenses that I'd cast from resin and I felt the pattern was much clearer against the white.  It does look pretty decent when used on original lenses though:

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Empty Lens Decal How-To.

Post  cripery Sun Nov 29, 2015 8:56 pm

Edit: - I've no idea where all the images have gone from this post........ mad2 Probably something I've done though...

OK, so a bit of a delay with this but here's a quick how-to of what I did for the pandemic lenses.

It's really pretty simple to do.  I used ink-jet printable water-slide decal paper, which I bought from here:

http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/.-Laminated-Inkjet-Water-Slide-Decal-Paper_CPJ322A.htm

In much the same way as the printable fabric paper it comes in two types: clear & white.  I've only used the clear so far.  On the clear the white of the paper will be transparent on the final decal, with the white it'll stay white.  I imagine that the colour will stay a lot more vivid looking on the white paper.  There are lots of options with this stuff too and I bet you could get better results with different kinds of paper.  For example, it looks like there is laser printer paper too.

You will also need some sort of varnish for water-proofing the ink.  This is what I used:

http://www.craftycomputerpaper.co.uk/.-Acrylic-Spray-UK-SALES-ONLY_SPRAY-ACRYLIC.htm

It actually seems like a really good all-purpose varnish and I've used it on other custom stuff as well.

I created the design on my PC using a freebie drawing package called Inkscape.  Not sure if it's a particularly good package but I just about managed to get it to do what I wanted:

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Inkscape

Then I printed out the design onto the decal paper:

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Printed

Once the ink is completely dry on the paper it needs varnishing.  One decent coat of the varnish seems to do the job.  This basically seals the ink for when it gets dunked in water and prevents it just running all over the place and ruining your decals.  I left the varnish to dry overnight  but you could probably get away with an hour or so.

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Varnish

Next, time to get your best cutting out skills on the go:

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Cutting

Make sure the lenses you're applying the decals to are clean and put a drop of water on the lens too - this helps with being able to reposition the lens when you apply it.

When you're ready just put the cut out decal in some clean water for 30 seconds or so.  You should find the decal slides really easily off the backing paper when you get it out:

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Inwater

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Sliding

Now, this is when it all gets a little tricky.  Just carefully slide the decal onto the lens.  Because it's all still wet it should slide around really easily (too easily most of the time).  The biggest problem I found is with wrinkles in the decal. Because the lenses are curved/domed and the decals are flat they don't really want to stick down properly.  I found that placing a paper towel over the decal and kind of pushing down with equal pressure usually gets pretty good results and drys up any excess water flying about.  This all takes a bit of practice (well, for me it did anyway!) and you might end up with a couple of aborted efforts.

After a bit of fiddling around you should get something that looks ok:

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Final

I found leaving them to dry overnight made sure they were really well stuck to the plastic.

Piecake wasn't much help particularly:

cripery's 'customizing' - Page 3 Helper

Anyway, hope that helps someone.  It is really straightforward and it'd be nice to see some original ideas. Very Happy Of course they will stick to vinyl too and are easier to position on a non-curved surface.
