So just because people are new, they should purposely miss out on something they'd like to add to their collections because they can't PM? And who's to say they haven't been joining discussions? Perhaps they only speak on certain subjects they're comfortable with, which won't quickly add up to 50 posts. And it's also been widely frowned upon for people to just rack up comments to unlock certain permissions.

In past experiences with non-50 post members, I'd PM them my e-mail if they expressed interest in my thread and we'd move the transaction there. Might not be the default idea people think of, but I'd say it's a viable option.
