I've been thinking for awhile about buying an airbrush and messing around with painting some of my blank sofubi/kaiju toys, but I am one of the least artistic people in the world.

Just wondering if anyone has some tips or resources that would help a noob like me get started. One of the things that I really want to figure out is how Luke and DSKI_ONE do paint rubs on figures like the hand-painted brains and the Mike Egan Bones/Lucky figures.

Give me your knowledge! I am ready to learn! study

Lol. Those three people you mentioned have some of the crappiest paint apps out there, but that's their style. Hahah.

Look into the materials and where to get them first. You need specific paint to have it adhere to the vinyl.

Btw, paint rubs are done with a rag soaked in paint.

Thanks for the tips, guys!

Gatiio, you have to remember, I said that I am incredibly talentless when it comes to all things artistic, so crappy paint apps will be right up my alley! lol!

And Itsa, I was already thinking that Monster Kolor would be good, just because I've heard a bunch of artists say they airbrush with that. Does anyone know if I'd be able to use the Monster Kolor for a rub as well?

Monster kolor looks like crap. Sometimes, sometimes mark nagata does great stuff with them, for the most part they look like metallic rainbow crap.

Some shop in SD has vcolor. Google it.

That would be Gunnzo. I know she ships, but if for whatever reason it don't work out I can help, I go there regularly.

I use Monster Kolor from time to time. It's good stuff ..performs well. They have tons of non-metallic, non-rainbow rainbow colors...The clears are really nice.
Vcolor is also really nice but in my opinion, no better performance wise.

It's funny you say that Ferg, I see a lot of folk using vcolor for one and MK for the other. I didn't mean the performance was bad. I just don't really appreciate metallics. As for the YG CAD worms, if that's MK, then it sure as hell looks great.

Go with what helps your project the best, I guess.

I'm sure all of this is a lot of trial an error, regardless of my snark on the interwebs. Smile

I like shiny, and matte, and reflective, and other. I don't spray myself, but I do use Golden fluids/HB almost exclusively for all my work, 2D & 3D. I know they have a new fluid/liquid ink that is sprayable. Not cheap, but I've been using Golden on birch & canvas for so long now, most others I've tried on my sculpts pale in comparison.

Yeah it seems a trend in Vintage sofubi collectors these days, "metallics are like so yesterday" so they dig like plain ass yellow and orange and just about as ugly of "vintage" color they can and say it's rad. To each their own, but I LOVE metallics!!!! Call me a sucker for shiny things but fuck yeah I do. When it gets too rainbowy I don't really like it, admittedly, but overall metallic paint apps really cast the light off of detailed sculpts and makes them come to life in some cases. Just my opinion of course...

Back to topic. I have used Monster Kolors too, and they are damn nice, but you had better clean your airbrush really well after each use. With acrylic paints it's easy, with good paint, you have to clean well or your stuff gets globbed up really fast, that's what I noticed.

A good alternative way to get started is the Aerosol Monster Kolors. They offer almost all of their colors and paints in Spray Cans!!! I sprayed out a Metallic Gold Jumping Brain 5", and it turned out really GOLD. Then I hit it with 5 layers (yep. 5) of clearcoat (MK) and it looked like super shiny Gold, almost wet looking or slightly chrome. It turned out really nice.

They have airbrush kits @ hobby stores that rock because you can get going with a $10 air tank and a $30 airbrush. Then MK has paint kits that ROCK, you get like 5 colors (colorchanging, moonflake, whatever you want) Good luck man. I need to get a new airbrush. Mine brokey. Crying or Very sad

I personally like the metallics too!

And thanks for the tips, man! You aren't the first person to tell me that I'd be fine getting a cheap airbrush setup, so that's really exciting to hear!

Yep, Go to a model shop, my first was a $27 plastic one, I got the gun, hoses, all that in a kit/bag, then the Tanks are just disposable. $10 each, which lasts about 3-4 figures, so it doesn't take you long to want an air compressor, but yes, you can get your toes wet for not too much, and that gun was awesome. Just as good as a nice one until I crushed it, and it's plastic, so it broke. I think good kits with a compressor are like $100-250. study
